Jihad - Linguistically means to struggle to the utmost. It also signifies fighting for the sake of Islam in the defense of Muslims or to raise the Word of Allah in lands where it is suppressed. It is of two types:
Fard 'ain - That which is called for by the Khalifah or Imam of the Ummah and is obligatory for all able Muslims to participate in.
Fard kifaayah: That which is done on a lesser or limited scale in which some of the Muslims must participate in order to lift the obligation of doing so from the whole.
The struggle to spread Islam whether it be physical, psychological or spiritual. However the term is most commonly used in reference to actual battle and generally termed as holy war. Jihad is regarded as one of the fundamentals of Islam.
