Chapter 321

Prohibition of Conferring a Title of Honor upon a Sinner, a Hypocrite, and the Like

Hadith 1725

Buraidah radiyallahu anhu said: The Messenger of Allah Sallalahu aleihi wa said,

"Do not address a hypocrite with the title of chief, (or similar titles of respect) for even if he deserves this title you will invite Allah's Wrath by using it for him.'' [Abu Dawud].

Commentary: A sinner does not deserve any respect. His respect amounts to inviting the Wrath of Allah. Hypocrites, innovators in religion, disbelievers, polytheists, atheists, heretics and those who disobey Allah and His Prophet Sallalahu aleihi wa fall in this category, and none of them deserve any respect. It is the Muslims, the pious and those who are faithful to Allah and His Prophet Sallalahu aleihi wa who are worthy of respect.
