Inspiration from Our HistoryThe Battle of Jaloola ended in victory for the Muslims, and they collected a huge amount of booty. They send the Khums (1/5) to the Caliph Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) who said when he saw it:
“By Allah, this should not be kept under any roof till I divide it.”
Abdur-Rahman ibn ‘Awf and Abdullah ibn Arqam (Radhi Allahu Anhuma) spent the night guarding it in the courtyard of the Masjid. The following morning, Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) came with the people and took the covers off the booty. When he saw the rubies, emeralds and jewels he wept.
Abdur-Rahman (Radhi Allahu Anhu) said to him, “Why are you weeping, O Ameer Al-Mu’mineen? By Allah this is the time for giving thanks.”
Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) said, “By Allah, that is not why I am weeping, but Allah never gives this to a people but they start to envy one another and hate one another, and if they start to envy one another that will cause enmity and division among them.”
