Question

Does being extravagant in the preparations of food for fast breaking lessen the reward of the fast?

Answer

It does not lessen the reward of the fast, but it is a forbidden act that is done after completing the fast. It does not lessen its reward, but this is included in the statement of Allah, the Most High:

"And eat and drink, but do not be wasteful. Verily, He (Allah) does not like those who are wasteful.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7: 31)

Therefore, being wasteful in itself is forbidden, and being moderate is half of livelihood. If the people have something as leftover, then they should give it away in charity, for verily that is better.

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimin (Rahimahullah)
